COSLA have partnered with the International Organisation for Migration to provide OISC regulated immigration advice for British National (Overseas) migrants. This specialist immigration caseworker support is a new service that will enable Local Authority staff to refer BN(O) migrants directly to IOM caseworkers, who can process Change of Conditions applications and assist with immigration-related queries.
If a BN(O) migrant is either destitute or at risk of destitution, a Change of Condition will seek to remove the No Recourse to Public Funds condition attached to their BN(O) visa, enabling them to access mainstream benefits, such as council housing. The process involves an IOM caseworker working closely with the BN(O) migrant to collect evidence in support of the application.
Note: This process Local Authority staff (or third sector organisation working with BN(O) migrants) to refer BN(O) migrants directly to IOM. This is not a public facing service.
If you have any questions about the wider referral process or would like to request a referral form, please email us at hongkongBNO@cosla.gov.uk.
